Web developer training in Douala: how to become a developer in Cameroon

What you really learn to become a web developer, how much work it takes, how to choose a course in Cameroon, and what you can do afterwards.

People who search for “web developer training Douala” or “web developer course Cameroon” usually have two questions: can I do it without any background, and does it lead anywhere? The answer to both is yes, with one condition we will state straight away. Web development can be learnt, but not quickly, and not by watching.

What a web developer does

They build websites and applications that open in a browser. A company’s home page, a school’s registration form, the dashboard where a shopkeeper tracks sales: all of that is web development.

The work splits in two. The visible part, often called the front end: what the user sees and touches. And the hidden part, the back end: the server, the database, whatever saves and retrieves information. A beginner starts with the first, then learns enough of the second to build a complete site.

What you learn, in order

You start with HTML, which structures the page, and CSS, which styles it. Then comes responsive design: making the site readable on a phone, which matters a great deal in Cameroon, where many people browse on mobile.

Then JavaScript, which brings the page to life. This is often where it gets hard, and that is normal. After that, a database and forms, so the site can save something. Finally, going live: domain name, hosting, backups. A site that stays on your computer does not exist for a client.

Along the way you also learn to use version control, the tool that keeps the history of your code. Employers almost always ask for it.

What it really takes

Time at the keyboard, above all. Lessons give you direction, but you progress by writing code, getting it wrong and fixing it. If you cannot practise between sessions, you will move slowly.

You also have to accept being stuck. A developer spends a good part of the day working out why something does not work. That is not failure, it is the job. English helps a lot too: documentation and answers to technical questions are mostly in English. You do not need to speak it fluently, but you need to read it.

A personal computer, even a modest one, changes everything. So does an internet connection, to search and to put work online.

How to choose your course

Ask any centre three questions, ours included. How many hours will I actually spend coding? Will I leave with projects online that I can show? And what happens after the last session?

Be wary of guaranteed job promises and of programmes that announce ten languages in a few weeks. Better to master the basics and be able to build a complete site than to skim through many tools. Our article on choosing a training centre goes into these points.

What you can do afterwards

A beginner web developer can aim for a junior developer or front-end integrator role in an agency or a company. They can also work for themselves, building sites for small businesses and shopkeepers, who need them more and more. With experience, the trade also opens onto mobile development and clients outside Cameroon.

Either way, your portfolio will speak for you. To know where to look and what to show, read finding an IT job in Cameroon.

Not sure it is for you?

Development is not for everyone, and that is fine. Before enrolling, read which IT career to choose: you will see whether another trade suits you better.

If this is the one, our web development course starts from zero and follows exactly this path, from HTML to going live. It is hands-on, in Douala (Makepè) or Yaoundé (Nkolbisson), or fully online, with a MINEFOP-approved certificate. Enrolment is open all year round. Write to us for the duration and arrangements.
