Excel training in Douala and Yaoundé: what you should be able to do at the end

Before paying for an Excel course or an office and secretarial course, here is what you should be able to do when you finish, and the questions that let you judge a training centre.

You search for “Excel training Douala” or “Excel training Yaoundé” and find dozens of offers that all promise the same thing. The same goes for “office and secretarial training Douala”. The safest way to choose is not to compare posters: it is to know what you should be able to do on the day you finish. Everything else can be judged from there.

What the office expects of you

In a small company, a school or a practice, nobody will ask you to “know Excel”. They will ask for the month’s sales report, the list of customers who have not paid, a schedule, an order form that calculates itself. Those are the tasks you will be judged on.

A good course takes you straight there. A bad one has you reciting menus.

What you should be able to do when you finish

The first level is building a clean sheet: well-named columns, amounts in the right format, a total row that updates when a line is added. It sounds simple. Many sheets passed around in companies do not respect it, and that is why they are wrong.

Next come the formulas used every day: adding up by condition, counting, testing with IF, finding information on another sheet. For that last one, XLOOKUP is a clear improvement on the old VLOOKUP, but it only exists in recent versions of Excel. An honest course teaches you both, because you will not always choose the version installed on your employer’s computer.

Then the tools that save hours: sorting, filtering, conditional formatting (late payments in red, for instance), and above all the pivot table. That is what turns a thousand lines of sales into a summary by month and by salesperson, in a few clicks. If you only learn one advanced thing, make it that one.

Finally, a readable chart, and page setup for printing or exporting to PDF. A sheet that prints on three pages cut in half will never be read.

Secretarial work does not stop at Excel

If you are aiming for a secretary or assistant post, Excel is not enough. Word matters just as much: a letter with proper margins, a report with headings and a table of contents, and mail merge, which lets you send the same letter to a hundred people without retyping it a hundred times. Add PowerPoint for meetings, and file management: knowing where things go, how to name them, how to find them again.

That is what separates someone who “knows computers” from someone you can trust with a department.

How to judge a course before paying

Ask for the written syllabus, line by line. If pivot tables and lookup functions are not on it, it is not an Excel course, it is an introduction.

Ask how much time you spend on the machine. A course where you watch the trainer project their screen for two hours will not teach you much. Excel is learnt with your hands on the keyboard.

Ask whether you will work on real cases. A stock file, a mock payroll, an invoice tracker: those are the files you progress on, and the ones you can use to show what you can do.

Ask what happens afterwards. You rarely get stuck in the classroom. You get stuck three weeks later, in front of a real file, when nobody is there to answer.

Finally, be wary of any promise of a job. A certificate opens a door, it does not guarantee it. What convinces an employer is a test passed in front of them.

How long it takes

It depends on your starting point and the time you put in between sessions. Someone who already uses a computer moves much faster than someone discovering the mouse, and that is normal. Be wary of durations announced before anyone has asked about your level.
