What does a website cost in Cameroon? What actually moves the bill

A shopkeeper checking his phone behind the counter

Nobody can give you a price without listening to you first. But we can tell you exactly what pushes the bill up or down — and how to read a quote.

If someone quotes you a price before asking three questions, they are selling a template, not a website. That is not necessarily dishonest, but you should know what you are buying. Here is what really makes up the price of a website in Cameroon, line by line.

What pushes the bill up

The number of pages, far less than you think. One more page costs little once the structure exists. What costs is the first one: it carries the design system, the navigation, the header, the footer, the phone layout.

Writing the words, far more than you think. That is half the work and it is where most websites fail. Supply your own text and you pay less. Ask us to write it and we will make you talk about your trade for two hours — and that is billed.

Selling online. A catalogue, stock, orders, payments: each adds rules, edge cases and error screens. A store costs several times a simple site, and rightly so.

Anything bespoke. A calculator, a customer area, a link to your till software: anything that exists nowhere else must be built, tested and fixed.

Photographs. Real photos of your workshop beat any stock image. But someone has to take them, and that counts in the quote.

What comes back every year

Two lines many quotes forget to mention, and that catch up with you after twelve months:

  • The domain name — your address, for example yourcompany.cm. It is rented yearly. Stop paying and the address goes back on sale; buying it back is very expensive.
  • Hosting — where your files live. Yearly too.

Always ask: how long are those two included for, and how much afterwards?

The three quote lines that should worry you

“Turnkey website” with no detail. A serious quote states how many pages, who writes the text, what is included after launch, and who owns the domain.

“Maintenance required” with no description. Maintenance is useful — security updates genuinely matter. But it must say what it covers: updates, backups, fixes, support, and how fast you get an answer.

Nothing about source files. Ask in writing: at the end, what do I walk away with? The right answer is: the domain in your name, the credentials, the design source files, and the freedom to go elsewhere.

The “free website” that costs every month

Platforms that build you a site in ten minutes are real tools. What they do not say loudly is that the subscription is monthly, forever, and that the day you stop, everything disappears. Over three years the total often exceeds a custom-built site — and you own nothing.

That is not always the wrong choice: to test an idea for three months, it is perfect. For a company that intends to last, it is an endless rental.

How to compare three quotes without being technical

Put them side by side and look for these six lines. Whoever answers all six is not necessarily the cheapest, but they are the one you will understand.

  1. Who writes the text.
  2. How many pages, and the price of an extra one.
  3. Who owns the domain, in writing.
  4. What is included after launch, and for how long.
  5. Whether you can edit your own text, and whether training is included.
  6. What you take with you if you leave.

Why we do not display prices

Because a displayed price would be wrong for almost everyone. A four-page site for a practice whose text already exists has nothing in common with a store of two hundred items to photograph. The quote is free, it comes after a conversation, it sets out the instalments — and it commits you to nothing.

And if your project is not worth what it would cost, we will say so. It has happened before.
